Is The Sealed Book Still Sealed?

On March 4, 2018, in the presence of eleven witnesses, the first part of the sealed portion was unsealed by Mauricio Berger! They were all astonished to discover that there were two separate sections to the sealed portion—with the greater part remaining sealed. The witnesses to this extraordinary event counted 42 plates in the newly unsealed section of the Book of Mormon plates. But of those 42 plates, only 19 would be translated.

It is very important to understand why only 19 plates were permitted to be translated at this time. In Brother Mauricio’s preface to The Sealed Book --, he emphasizes that the remaining 23 plates will not be unveiled until “the people of the church are living in accordance with these first teachings revealed”. From the message revealed in the initial 19 plates we can learn how to live in Zion. It is through faith that we learn line upon line and precept upon precept until all things are fulfilled.

In addition to the 23 plates that were not translated, there are numerous places within The Sealed Book -- where information was excluded. We have been denied access to greater spiritual insight in more than 50 places in this recently translated sacred book! The missing information is indicated by a dash. An example is on page 21, verse 23 in the “Words of Moroni” and is in the middle of a sentence! The very last dash is between two sentences near the end of “Acts of the Three Nephites” on page 197 in Chapter 14, verse 59.

At the beginning of the readings during the First Study Group I was allowing myself to be distracted by these dashes. They looked like  “formatting errors”! However, once I understood the significance of them, they suddenly took on a completely new character. They are like “admonishing miracles”—we are not spiritually ready for the information! Similar to the situation with the untranslated 23 plates, God in His mercy has spared us from the responsibility of being accountable for this additional light.

An unexpected, but added, source of knowledge are the references—all of the references were obtained through the Seer Stones! Brother Mauricio says (in an email statement translated from Portuguese): “The stones made it possible for me to have the images that appeared in my eyes while I translated the references in the book. These references always corresponded to the scriptural content that I had in my mind of the LDS. Already the texts of the [inspired] version of the Bible and the book of Tobias, these were projected to me in another corner of my mind, as information that I did not know.”

Many people within the Restoration Movement have been eager to read this newly translated part of the sealed portion. However, there are quite a number of reports from saints who are extremely disappointed with what they have read. Even people who believed the reports coming from Brazil, and the testimonies of the witnesses, have read parts or even all of the book and have been disappointed. They have made comments such as: there’s nothing in it to warrant it having been sealed; it’s just a repeat of other scriptures; it contradicts the scriptures we already have, etc.

How can this happen? Many other people read the book and marvel at the message and insight that it contains! We have been counseled to approach the reading of this sacred book with preparation through prayer and to seek light and understanding from the Lord. Just as we should not try to rush into the presence of the Lord, we need to take time to prepare for the reading of His word.

There is a tendency to pass over any information in the front matter of books! But please take the time to study the words the translator has written in the preface. Along with explanations of unique aspects of this translation, you will find a challenge similar to that in the Book of Mormon: “And if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost; and by the power of the Holy Ghost, ye may know the truth of all things” (RLDS/LDS Moroni 10:5).

So in a very real way, The Sealed Book -- is still sealed! I believe that the varied and opposing responses of so many people actually prove the validity of this statement. The truths and mysteries of God contained in this sacred book are not readily available to everyone. Those truths and mysteries can only be opened to the understanding of our hearts and minds through spiritual preparation, our faith in the power of God, and our acceptance of God’s awesome power. May we always take sufficient time to prepare ourselves—so that we can receive an understanding of the greater light and mysteries of our God that are hidden, or sealed, within this sacred record.

Scriptures that support our desire and our need to understand the mysteries of God that are contained in the sacred records:

■ Acts of the Three Nephites 1:5-7

■ RLDS Alma 14:103; LDS Alma 26:22

■ RLDS II Nephi 11:86; LDS II Nephi:26:17

And he that will not harden his heart, to him is given the greater portion of the word, until it is given unto him to know the mysteries of God, until they know them in full; And they that will harden their hearts, to them is given the lesser portion of the word, until they know nothing concerning his mysteries. RLDS Alma 9:18-19; LDS Alma 12:10-11

And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God; but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Luke 8:10

But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith; yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words. RLDS Alma 16:151; LDS Alma 32:27

■ RLDS Alma 14:103; LDS Alma 26:22

Remember it is sacred and cometh from above: and if thou wilt inquire, thou shalt know mysteries which are great and marvelous. RLDS Doctrine and Covenants 6:5b; LDS Doctrine and Covenants 6:10-11

For I have not commanded you to come up hither to trifle with the words which I shall speak, but that you should hearken unto me, and open your ears that ye may hear, and your hearts that ye may understand, and your minds that the mysteries of God may be unfolded to your view. RLDS Mosiah 1:39; LDS Mosiah 2:9

■ RLDS Mosiah 5:83; LDS Mosiah 8:19

And I said unto him, Lord, the Gentiles will mock at these things because of our weakness in writing; for Lord thou hast made us mighty in word by faith, but thou hast not made us mighty in writing. RLDS Ether 5:23; LDS Ether 12:23

I give unto men weakness, that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.

Behold, I will shew unto the Gentiles their weakness, and I will shew unto them that faith, hope, and charity, bringeth unto me the fountain of all righteousness.

And I, Moroni, having heard these words, was comforted, and said, O Lord, thy righteous will be done, for I know that thou workest unto the children of men according to their faith; for the Brother of Jared said unto the mountain Zerin, Remove, and it was removed.

And if he had not had faith, it would not have moved; wherefore thou workest after men have faith; for thus did thou manifest thyself unto thy disciples.

For after they had faith and did speak in thy name, thou didst shew thyself unto them in great power…. RLDS Ether 5:28-32; LDS Ether 12:27-31

And if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ… by the power of the Holy Ghost, ye may know the truth of all things.

And whatsoever thing is good, is just and true; wherefore, nothing that is good denieth the Christ, but acknowledgeth that he is. RLDS Moroni 10:5-6; LDS Moroni 10:4-6

In the Shoes of a Prophet

(Testimony of José Chávez)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the world, it is my honor to greet you in the name of Jesus Christ and this humble but loving group of Saints in Brazil in which thanks to the will of the Lord, I have the honor of belonging.

I would like to tell you a story about how a Venezuelan refugee has become part of this community of Saints in southern Brazil, a story that as you will see is not only about us but also about you, thanks to your support for this work.

My name is José Chávez, I was born in the city of Maracaibo in Venezuela forty-one years ago, being blessed with good parents, great-grandson of Sephardic Spanish immigrants, in a good environment and with enough resources to survive and prepare academically to face any challenge in life in a normal country. It can be said that at 19 years of age I was a common young university student, but without interest in spiritual and religious issues. One day I met some LDS missionaries and the Book of Mormon came into my hands. I had not read the scriptures but when I had it in my hands, something “clicked” on my mind and in my heart; so following the promise in Moroni 10: 4-5 I asked the Lord if what I was reading was true. It was then that for the first time I felt the Holy Spirit with a feeling of joy and a very strong emotion starting at that moment my path in the restored gospel.

With the passage of time I found doctrines that did not match either the Bible or the Book of Mormon, so I started looking for information on the internet and contacted brothers from various branches of the restoration in the United States who answered my questions and they visited me to instruct me in the gospel. Among those brothers were those from the conference of branches and Brother Gary Metzger whom I thank for guiding me in my first steps in the restoration. At the same time my  family and friends met to study the scriptures, creating a small group in the neighborhood where I lived. At that time we came into contact with the Church of Jesus Christ in Pennsylvania who began to visit us more frequently. They taught us with much love and faith, administering also the ordinances and sacraments. With the passing of time I was ordained Elder of the church with the authority of the priesthood that came from the line of Sidney Rigdon. I also had the opportunity to attend a conference of that church in the city of Chicago where to my pleasant surprise there was also Brother Gary as a guest.

Time continued to advance and our group was organized, we had our sacramental meetings and a study group that was still growing, as well as my family began to grow as I now had a wife and two children.

Unfortunately, changes began to occur in my beautiful country; the government expropriated companies and organizations, blocked the freedom of monetary exchange so that only the government could exchange our national currency for foreign currency—which caused private companies to close and foreign companies to leave the country—leaving a lot of unemployed people, I being among those people.

The same government  took control of the distribution of food, placing corrupt and inexperienced people as managers of state enterprises which caused a shortage of food in all states, unleashing a famine throughout the country.

Due to the closure of companies, the economy fell and the currency had to be devalued every month, so the salaries of university professionals were less than $30 per month and the minimum wage does not reach $10, which is why thousands of people began to protest against the government, from 2014 until now. Since they had no weapons, the protests were with flags and banners, while the government sent the national guard and the army to shoot the protesters.

The neighborhood where we lived was the focus of several protests. The military arrived firing regardless of the fact that children, old people and sick people lived in the buildings. We saw how several people were injured and killed; those who were imprisoned were horribly tortured in an attempt to force them to betray the leaders of the protests to be able to imprison them.

Gradually, everything else deteriorated. It was impossible to get medicines. Hospitals were saturated with people they could not attend because they did not have enough medical supplies. Many children and adults sick with cancer and other chronic diseases began to die because they did not have treatment. People who needed dialysis stopped being treated and many died.

The famine continued to advance so that most people lost a lot of weight until they were in a skeletal condition. Parents had no way to feed their children. Many people began to eat from the garbage in the streets which also caused the increase of crime and insecurity.

Millions of people began to flee the country, mostly across borders. According to data from UNESCO (United Nations) there are more than 4 million Venezuelans who have fled to other countries, many of them in refugee status.

Public services also went bankrupt to the point that in our city, Maracaibo, began an electrical rationing so we had electricity only 8 hours a day, in a place where it is always summer and temperatures often exceed 40 degrees celsius (104oF).

In my case, we had not thought about emigrating but when spending time with my one month salary I could only buy food for three days. Our situation deteriorated to the point of being able to eat only once a day. I lost more than 60 pounds of weight and my 13 year old son suffered from malnutrition. Our quality of life continued to worsen. We had to sell our car in order to eat, so we now had to walk long distances. We had to walk across the border to Colombia to buy some food, and many times the military on the Venezuelan side of the border would take away part of what we could bring. We could never buy clothes again, and our clothes and shoes began to break leaving us with very little clothes to wear. It was impossible to buy medicine. If we got sick we could only turn to our prayers with faith. We felt like the Hebrew slaves in Egypt waiting for a Moses to lead us to Zion—we asked for that every day in our prayers.

One day Brother Gary (with whom I have always been in contact) asked me if I had heard about the Sealed Portion of the Book of Mormon; I said yes. What I knew was that Moroni was asked to include it in the plates, then sealed the vision of Jared’s brother and that it would be revealed in a future time. However, it was included in the records and Joseph Smith Jr was instructed not to translate it. Then the brother told me that the Sealed Portion had come to light in Brazil and that he saw the plates with his own eyes. Upon hearing that, I immediately began investigating the Sealed Portion and how it appeared in Brazil.

Looking for information, I found the story of Brother Mauricio Berger and the testimony of Brothers Joni, Wagner, and Valdecí. I had not deepened much in my research but the same thing happened as when I first took the Book of Mormon in my hands; something “clicked” on my mind and in my heart so I immediately prayed to the Lord for guidance and received the same response from the Holy Spirit as a fire from within, so from that moment I knew that this work is true.

In spite of all the inconveniences that little by little were ending our life expectancy, I clung to my faith in our Lord—since if we lived, for Him we lived and if we died, for Him we died; the important thing is that His will be fulfilled. I had many desires to come to Brazil and meet Brother Mauricio, the witnesses and all the beautiful group of Saints that we could see in the information on the internet.

We wanted to come to Brazil not only to escape the horrible reality that we lived in our country but because through the Holy Spirit I felt that things were happening here like when the Church was restored in 1830. So we began to pray to our heavenly Father so that a path would open and we could see in person everything that was happening. In my heart I knew that Brother Mauricio Berger is a Prophet and that the true priesthood authority was being organized. I couldn't stop thinking about everything that was happening, the ministering of angels and the Sealed Portion.

When it seemed that hope was farther away, the Lord presented the opportunity to my son José Ángel and me to meet with brothers from the conference of branches in São Paulo, Brazil. My wife told me that we should do our best to fulfill our desire to meet the Brothers in Palhoça that she could stay and resist for another time waiting to see the will of the Lord, since if He wanted us to go out He would provide the way.

In order to leave the country with my 13-year-old son, my wife had to cross the Colombian border with us on foot so that there was no problem in taking the child out of the country without a special permission from the government. Then she had to return to Venezuela alone in the same way.

We took a plane from Riohacha in northern Colombia, to Bogotá and then we entered Brazil through the city of São Paulo where we spent four days sharing with the conference brothers until Thursday, August 1, when we decided to take a bus to Florianopolis.

We had previously contacted Brother Valdeci Machado who was always willing to receive us. In fact, he went to pick us up at the road terminal and lovingly gave us lodging in his house.

The emotion could not be greater! We were going to know the work with our own eyes and we also had the opportunity to meet the Prophet, the witnesses and all the Saints in Palhoça. That same day at night Brother Valdeci gave me a copy of The Sealed Book, and I had the opportunity to start reading it for the first time.

The next day in the morning we went to a meeting in the Center to study the Sealed Book. I felt like I was arriving in Kirtland when brothers from other cities and countries came to meet the saints. With great joy we were able to greet and embrace the witnesses and members of the priesthood. It was as if I already knew them; we were also received with joy and love. Then Brother Mauricio arrived and I had no idea what words to say to a Prophet. I felt a strong energy in him and told him, “It is an honor to meet a prophet.” He smiled and with much humility told me to call him by name, that our only leader is Jesus Christ and we should serve only Him.

After telling our brothers the situation, they told us that we should not worry because they were going to help us. They immediately offered to locate us in a new home and began to look for rental options. As we arrived in winter and we didn't have many clothes, the Brothers and Sisters gathered clothes and blankets so that we could bear the cold.

Shortly after this they found an apartment next to a brother for us to move into. They also gathered food and bought everything we needed to be able to eat for a while. They also obtained a ticket for my wife to leave Venezuela to Colombia so she could come to Brazil—where thanks to God and the brothers we are together again. Never in my life had I seen a group of Saints act with so much love and work so well together to help other people. They are a big family to which we are proud to belong. There are no words that can thank all their noble acts.

Brother Mauricio told me that four months earlier he had a revelation that a foreigner was going to come to work in the Work. For me it was a great honor and a great blessing to be able to start working on the Work of the Lord with these noble Saints in Palhoça.

One time we were getting ready to go on a missionary activity and Brother Mauricío looked at my shoes (they were the only ones that I had and were full of holes in the soles from so much walking). He told the Brothers, “We need other shoes for Brother José.” They asked the size but in Brazil the sizes are different from those of Venezuela. I could not say exactly what it was, so Brother Mauricio took off one of his shoes and asked me to try it on, seeing that it was from my size, he took off the other shoe and insisted that I put it on. I told him that I could not leave him without shoes, so he took mine and put them on. At that time I jokingly said, “I had never been in the shoes of a prophet!” He smiled and replied, “It is good to be in the shoes of a missionary!”

vol4.img.1

Working in the missionary work I have been able to feel the Holy Spirit every day. I have heard healing testimonies such as that of Sister Fernanda who was cured of a brain tumor by the authority of the priesthood through the laying on of hands. Wonderful things happen in our meetings, and sometimes we can see the lights of Angels around the hill Cambirela—confirming that it is the same Lord who is in charge of His Work and this second invitation.

The missionary activity is intense, not only taking the restored gospel to the hundreds of seekers who contact us, as well as the people on the street, but also humanitarian aid to the most needy people. The saints work hard to bring food, blankets, and the love of God to those who need it most—children’s homes, nursing homes, vulnerable families, and sick people. The activity does not stop any day of the week, to help with what we have, to the people who need it most.

vol4.img.2

In the last two weeks there are two cases that in particular have impacted me since these are two families that also arrived from Venezuela. One of them is the family of Brother Jackson who was in the military. Because he would not follow orders to shoot his own people, he fled with his family along the border. He came first to the north of Brazil and from there they managed to move here, six adults (including his mother with a physical disability on one foot) and three young children including a baby a few months old. Jackson got a job at a gas stand and works hard to help provide for his family group. Brother Joni met him at the gas stand and we began to visit him to take the gospel and also a basic food basket (which we prepare for the needy). Now they are receiving classes and are very interested in knowing the work of this second invitation. We also consider them part of this family of saints.

Last week we met another family of Venezuelans, Alejandro, his wife Rocelys (who is pregnant) and their two children Brian and Justin who, despite their situation, are always happy. They were living on the island of Florianopolis in a small town where they did not have many sources of work. They already had lived more than a month without jobs and nothing to eat, had not been able to pay for electricity and had three weeks without electricity. The children ate only once a day at the school where they studied, and their parents were completely desperate. Hearing this, Brother Mauricio went to see the situation with the intention of helping them with a basic food basket, paying them the electricity bill, and the months they were due of rent. We were surprised to see the terrible conditions of the place where they lived and how expensive the rent was, and how the owner of the place clearly took advantage of them. Seeing this, Brother Mauricio and Brother Joni (Bishop) asked us to help them find a better place to live and a decent job for Alejandro. We went to look for them and all their things to take them provisionally to the house of Brother Mauricio while we found a rented apartment, and for Alejandro to begin working initially in the factory of Brother Valdeci. As always, with the intention of helping the people who need it most, we help with what is within our means.

In previous days I could also see how food was collected and taken to a children’s center in a very poor community where in addition to feeding them they are given education and cultural activities. Many times the saints would like to be able to do more of what they are doing, so we ask the Heavenly Father that we can carry the restored gospel of this second invitation as well as bring help to many more people.

vol4.img.5

Through social networks and electronic messaging services many people across the country have begun to ask questions about The Sealed Book, and many have asked to be baptized. We hope that a large number of people can receive their baptism during the conference in November and from that moment, new study centers will be open in several cities in Brazil.

I want to thank you who are reading these words, because without your help and support it would not be possible to carry out these missionary and humanitarian activities. I ask the Lord to bless you and allow you to continue supporting His work.

Every day I thank the Eternal Father for having blessed us so much, for allowing us to be here with this great family of Saints, for allowing us to help people in need, for allowing us to be part of this work of the second invitation, to enjoy the immense honor of living these historical days of this dispensation—and for allowing me to walk in the shoes of a prophet on the road to Zion—our hope and our project!!!

Your Brother in Christ,

José Chávez Hernández
